Considered one of the most important figures in Jamaican intuitive art, Roy Reid brought a very unique style into the arena. Although the content of his paintings is often steeped in spirituality, the social flavor of Jamaican people, and historical events, his use of very bold lines gives his work a child-like quality, invoking a sense of joy.

In an interview with Reid, he explained his use of the brilliant white color in clothes of the people in some of his paintings. He referred to these people dressed in white as "Bright Star People." In the mid-1980's, crime in Jamaica began to rise. He started this series to represent the good in Jamaican people. Paintings in this series often depict groups of people in procession and sometimes, simply a sole person. In this body of work, "The Flowers Lady” and "The Baby Mother of Smoking Joe” are examples of the Bright Star People.

Roy Reid also had an uncanny way of portraying Jamaican people in their everyday life. He had the ability to capture people's postures, bodies and body parts in an exaggerated and amusing way. He referred to this series as "Funny Little People.” The figures are sometimes simply leaning, standing, walking or even dancing.
